Psalm 26

Psalm 26

Of David.

¹Vindicate me,^(A) Lord,
    for I have led a blameless life;^(B)
I have trusted^(C) in the Lord
    and have not faltered.^(D)
²Test me,^(E) Lord, and try me,
    examine my heart and my mind;^(F)
³for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love^(G)
    and have lived^(H) in reliance on your faithfulness.^(I)

⁴I do not sit^(J) with the deceitful,
    nor do I associate with hypocrites.^(K)
⁵I abhor^(L) the assembly of evildoers
    and refuse to sit with the wicked.
⁶I wash my hands in innocence,^(M)
    and go about your altar, Lord,
⁷proclaiming aloud your praise^(N)
    and telling of all your wonderful deeds.^(O)

⁸Lord, I love^(P) the house where you live,
    the place where your glory dwells.^(Q)
⁹Do not take away my soul along with sinners,
    my life with those who are bloodthirsty,^(R)
¹⁰in whose hands are wicked schemes,^(S)
    whose right hands are full of bribes.^(T)
¹¹I lead a blameless life;
    deliver me^(U) and be merciful to me.

¹²My feet stand on level ground;^(V)
in the great congregation^(W) I will praise the Lord.

Obadiah 17-21

New International Version

¹⁷But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;^(A)
    it will be holy,^(B)
    and Jacob will possess his inheritance.^(C)
¹⁸Jacob will be a fire
    and Joseph a flame;
Esau will be stubble,
    and they will set him on fire^(D) and destroy^(E) him.
There will be no survivors^(F)
    from Esau.”
The Lord has spoken.

¹⁹People from the Negev will occupy
    the mountains of Esau,
and people from the foothills will possess
    the land of the Philistines.^(G)
They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria,^(H)
    and Benjamin^(I) will possess Gilead.
²⁰This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan
    will possess the land as far as Zarephath;^(J)
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
    will possess the towns of the Negev.^(K)
²¹Deliverers^(L) will go up on^[a] Mount Zion
    to govern the mountains of Esau.
    And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.^(M)

The Rich Man and Lazarus

¹⁹“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.^(A) ²⁰At his gate was laid a beggar^(B) named Lazarus, covered with sores ²¹and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.^(C) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

²²“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. ²³In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. ²⁴So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,^(D) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’^(E)

²⁵“But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,^(F) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.^(G) ²⁶And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

²⁷“He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, ²⁸for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,^(H) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

²⁹“Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses^(I) and the Prophets;^(J) let them listen to them.’

³⁰“‘No, father Abraham,’^(K) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

³¹“He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
